Acorn People Review Stations:The purpose of the centers will be to review key concepts learned while reading The Acorn People, an autobiography we read in the fall. Studetns will be placed into groups of three or four. Each center will review a skill or comprehension strategy learned during the reading of the story. Each group will participate in three stations on day 1 and three stations on day 2.
Activity:
Simile vs. Metaphor: Using iPads, iPod touches, or smartphones students will scan the QR codes and sort the song examples into two piles: similes and metaphors.
Group Members Roles: 1) Scanner 2) Identifier 3) Teacher. Roles will be rotated after each example is identified as a simile and a metaphor.

Background Information:
Each day my students read a different nonfiction article as a bell-ringer. Reading grade level nonfiction is proven to help students' vocabulary as well as help them be successful in other academic areas. Comprehension strategies such as finding the main idea, summarizing, etc have been taught prior to the lesson.
Activity:
Students in groups of three will read the article "Fit for a King"
After students read they will highlight five important words. No more than five may be highlighted so choose carefully.
Log-in to Socrative software.
Refer to the article and answer the questions individually.

LA 7.1.5.a Determine meaning of words through structural analysis, using knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots, prefixes, and suffixes to understand complex words, including words in science, mathematics, and social studies.
Background Information:
Greek and Latin word families are taught in Elkhorn during middle school. This supplements generic vocabulary instruction and takes the place of spelling.
Activity:
Using Vocab Grabber as a class "Grab" a word from a passage.
Open up the application "Show Me"
Tap the "Create a New Show Me" icon
Write the word at the top of the blank space in the ShowMe App.
Add an appropriate picture by selecting the frame icon (second button on the left)-- Search images on the web to find a picture that matches the meaning of the word.
Press the red record button.
Select the green color.
For one minute (timer displays at the bottom) students will pass the iPad back and forth identifying synonyms of the word identified. Press the pause button.
Select the red color.
Press the red record button to resume recording. For one minute students will pass the iPad back and forth identifying antonyms of the word identified.
Press pause.
When the two minutes are up select the "Save Show Me" button in the top left corner.
